Memory Image

Memory Image, an exhibition of works by Elaine de Kooning and Eric Haze, charts the genealogy of a gesture over fifty years.

In 1972, at the age of ten, Haze sat alongside his younger sister to have their portrait painted by de Kooning. When Haze was not sitting, de Kooning provided him with paints and canvases with which to work. Under her guidance, Haze completed two abstract canvases over the course of several days. In 2020, long since having established himself as a leading street artist and graphic designer, Haze revisited those canvases during a residency at the Elaine de Kooning House. Seven new compositions seek to understand the essence of his nascent gesture and de Kooning’s role in shaping it. Select works by Elaine de Kooning provide context to the moment in which this gesture was born and insight into the artist whom Haze considers both his mentor and his muse.

This exhibition is a joint production between the Elaine de Kooning House and the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center.
