The East End in the Abstract
February 10, 2025 — June 20, 2025
in Avram Gallery at Stony Brook Southampton
In 1972, at the age of ten, Eric Haze sat to have his portrait painted by Elaine de Kooning. During these sessions, de Kooning provided Haze with paints and canvases with which to work. De Kooning guided the young Haze in completing two abstract paintings.
In 2020, long since having established himself as a leading street artist and graphic designer, Haze revisited those nascent works during a residency at the Elaine de Kooning House. The results of this residency were seven new paintings, re-imaginings of those early works which seek to understand the essence of their gesture and de Kooning’s role in shaping it.
The exhibition Memory Image presents these new works alongside the original two canvases painted with de Kooning. De Kooning's portrait of Haze will be exhibited with one of her own self portraits. This exhibition is a joint production between the Elaine de Kooning House and the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center.
