Education
Educational programs at the Pollock-Krasner House connect visitors of all ages with the artistic legacies of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner through art history, theory, and practice. Educational programming is made possible in part by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Gov. Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature.

Site Visits for Students Grades 3 - 12
Students visit the home and studio of abstract painters, Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner, a national landmark in East Hampton. Students develop critical and creative thinking skills as as they look at and talk about what they see in sculptures, paintings, and prints by many artists on display. Fostering emotional intelligence through art, students discover creative and constructive ways Pollock and Krasner expressed their feelings with paint. As they visit their historic house and explore the studio barn filled with paint splatters where Pollock and Krasner created their groundbreaking masterpieces, students learn from primary resources and local history comes alive. Following the tour, students sketch or create drip paintings on the spectacular grounds overlooking Accabonac Creek. This trip is an eye opening experience as students of all abilities discover that creativity and imagination can be inspired within all of us.
At Your School for Students grades 3 - 12
For local schools that cannot obtain buses, presentations and painting workshops given at the school are available.
Our Express Yourself program invites students to discuss artists Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Pablo Picasso, Edvard Munch and others who express emotions in paintings, and then follow up with hands on related projects.
Virtual live tours and programs are available for schools everywhere.

Fee for trip with tour and sketching > $1.00 per student
Fee for trip with tour and drip painting* > $5.00 per student (In case of rain, the program includes tour only - there is no indoor painting fascility)
*Includes 11 x 14 inch canvas board and tempera paint
Fee payable to Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center.
Trips are typically 1 1/2 hour, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10:00 am -5:00 pm, April-October.
Groups are welcome to bring a picnic lunch. There are no indoor eating facilities.
Maximum tour group size is 25 students in the historic house.
We recommend one chaperone to 10 children.
Staff Development Workshops for Teachers
Staff development workshops for teachers are given at the museum or virtually. Museum trips for students and teachers can be scheduled as part of the program.
During interactive slide shows, Joyce Raimondo, Education Coordinator, models how to facilitate engaging discussions about modern masterpieces by such artists as van Gogh, Picasso, and Pollock. Rather than simply provide information, Ms. Raimondo demonstrates how to ask questions that invite students to form their own interpretations about what they see. The questioning technique prompts detailed and carefully considered observations. Students are encouraged to debate and express their opinions while accepting varied viewpoints.
This program helps prepare students for English Language Arts Assessment Test and meets the New York State Standards for the Arts. The discussions enhance academic skills and can be applied to other areas of leaning such as social studies, language arts, and science. The approach helps students 1) develop language skills 2) increase observation skills 3) enhance critical and creative thinking 3) gain confidence speaking within a group 4) debate and accept varied opinions 4) develop the ability to describe, analyze, and interpret art 5) express emotions constructively 6) gain knowledge and enjoyment of art history.
Hands-on Projects
Following the slide talks, teachers learn how to utilize art history as a springboard for creativity in related projects. Designed to maximize creative thinking, the projects are based on revolutionary modern art movements.
Teacher Outcome

2) Teachers will develop ability to describe, analyze, and interpret artworks based on what they see.

OUTREACH PROGRAMS
We work with non-profit groups to encourage people of all ages and abilities to find creative expression through art. Programs include tours and painting activities at the museum as well as art presentations and workshops at the organization’s site. Our programs serve diverse groups such as bereavement centers, homeless shelters, cancer survivor centers, and institutions serving individuals with developmental disabilities, autism, and Alzheimers among others. For groups outside the local region, live virtual programs are arranged.
LIBRARY PROGRAMS
We partner with libraries to provide tours, art history presentations, and hands on workshops. The programs are conducted in person at local libraries or virtually for a worldwide audience. Designed for novice and experienced artists alike, each session begins with an interactive slide show about Pollock, Krasner, and other modern artists, and optionally includes a hands-on component based on the techniques of modern artists. Tours for library groups at the museum and virtually are also offered.
ONLINE PROGRAMS WITH JOYCE RAIMONDO
Zoom programs with Joyce Raimondo, Education Coordinator, are designed to spark creativity by exploring the groundbreaking techniques and ideas of Pollock, Krasner, and other modern artists. A range of topics are explored each month along with hands-on projects and virtual tours. The programs are free, registration is required.
Family Tour and Drip Painting Workshops
For children ages five and above and adult companions.
Guided by Joyce Raimondo, Education Coordinator, tour the home and studio of famous abstract artists Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner in East Hampton, NY. Then, express your creativity as you make your own drip paintings outdoors on the spectacular grounds. $10 fee includes supplies (11 x 14 inch canvas board, tempera paint) and admission.
RULES: At least one adult must register with children. Everyone on property - adults and children - must have a pre-paid registration. The program is given during non-public hours, and space is limited. We cannot admit additional people on property other than those registered. Your purchase is non-refundable and no exchanges of dates are given. If it rains, the tour portion of the program will be given and participants will be given drip painting kits to create at home.
Pre-registration is required.
Meet Joyce
Joyce Raimondo, Education Coordinator at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center for over twenty years, is an expert in museum education, artist, and author. Formerly she was Family Programs Coordinator at The Museum of Modern Art in New York and is Founding Director of Imagine That! Art Education. She is author of seven children's art books, including The Museum of Modern Art’s popular Art Safari series and the award winning Art Explorers books. A painter, muralist, and sculptor, her illustrations have been published in the New York Times, Boston Globe, and numerous publications.
